Knox Writers’ House Contributor’s Pick of the Week 7/9/2012

From Propaganda Suite by M.C. Hyland in Twin Cities, MN

Chosen by Robin Behn in Birmingham, AL who says:

M.C.Hyland’s “Propaganda Suite” is, as she explains, a “little bunch of poems” inspired by “translations, I think possibly through some sort of computer translator, of text on Maoist propaganda posters.” The playfulness of that introduction carries over into these four little poem-bursts, all spoken in a cozy yet politically savvy second person address to Mao: “Chairman, O Chairman!” The voice brings about a kind of dreaminess (think of a co-ed, swooning) and dreamlike-ness (think razor’s edge surrealism) as Mao’s poster messages and images are cleverly and almost but not quite innocently repurposed and uttered back unto him. Delicious and intriguing listening!
